Monthly Demonstration Meeting 9th July- Richard Chao – Portraiture in Watercolour

Monthly Demonstration Meeting 9th July
Richard Chao – Portraiture in Watercolour

We are very happy to welcome Richard Chao to demonstrate Portraiture in Watercolour at our next monthly meeting on 9th July, 7:30pm at the Stan Stevens Studio, Deerubbin Centre, George St, Windsor.

Richard is a Chinese artist living in Sydney, Australia. Born in a family of artists, he started drawing at the age of 5. He then pursued his art education in Xi’an Fine Arts College, Xi’an Fine Arts Academy, and finally obtained his Master of Art in Xi’an Jiaotong University.

Richard also became a teacher for 9 years in a Chinese university. He worked as a cartoonist and designer in a Chinese newspaper for 13 years where he produced a lot of oil paintings. After settling down in Sydney, he began to focus on watercolour.

Richard is an enthusiastic watercolourist with a very keen sense of color. This had been initially reflected in his oil paintings. Focusing primarily now on portraiture, Richard will share his love of the watercolour medium with us.

He vividly captures the characteristics and nature of his subjects. His paintings not only witness his exquisite techniques and coloring skills, but also the deep influence of classical art upon him. He has also received numerous awards as an artist.

This exhibition includes the 1872 work, “Impression, Soleil Levant, 1872 Sunrise” that coined
the name of the popular art movement of Impressionism.

This masterpiece together with the some forty impressionist and related paintings from the Marmottan, the Tate, and Australian and New Zealand collections is coming to the NGA.

The works reveal the formative characteristics of Impressionism-depiction of light, purer colour
and capturing the momentary view- by a new generation of artists
who abandoned their studios for the world outside.

This is an exciting opportunity to see a masterful exhibition of works
that became emblematic of a cultural movement.

Plein Air at Streeton Lookout, Freemans Reach 16th June

MTAS Plein Air Painting at Streeton Lookout, Freemans Reach
Sunday, 16th June

You are invited to our next Plein Air Painting Day that will be held at Streeton Lookout, Freemans Reach this Sunday, 16th June.

Bring along your paints and drawing materials and your morning tea/picnic lunch. Join us for the beautiful scenery of Freemans Reach painted all those years ago by Arthur Streeton, after whom the lookout is named, and captured in his beautiful work “Purple noon’s transparent might”.

Arthur Streeton’s images celebrate the blue and gold palette of Australia’s sun-drenched landscape. In early 1896 Streeton travelled to the upper reaches of the Hawkesbury River, between Richmond Bridge and Windsor, where he was inspired by the expansive view looking towards the Blue Mountains. ‘The purple noon’s transparent might’ takes it’s title from a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley that embraces the natural world – sun, sky, water and mountains – and was painted in two days ‘during a shade temperature of 108 degrees’, in a state of ‘artistic intoxication with thoughts of Shelley in my mind’.

Come along and bring your friends.

Time: 9am to 3pm
When: Sunday, 16th June
Venue: Streeton Lookout, 542 Terrace Road, Freemans Reach
Bring: Your paints or drawing materials for en plein air, your morning tea and lunch

For more info contact Kym 0413 809 685 or mtas.com.au
